The project is for an apartment, in a residential neighbourhood of Dwarka in Delhi. Located on the fifth floor of a quaint housing society, that has an old world charm, the apartment offers serene views of the forest towards one side, which is a visual relief from the usual concrete cityscape of Dwarka. Ironically, the condition in which they had bought the apartment was far from a dream. It was 1500sqft of neglect and was in complete shambles as it had been unoccupied for a very long time and hence had become home to flocks of pigeons, wasps, spiders and what not. A complete mess!
The highlight of the project is the multiple Arches that adorn the apartment in various forms and sizes. The Arches came into being during the planning stage when the architects wanted to carve out an entrance lounge that would act as a buffer space before stepping into the living and dining spaces on either side. This space was created by strategically designing this permeable division through a continuous archway that wrapped around the entrance lobby and seamlessly concealed the oddly located column and beams which were a hindrance in the layout earlier. This solution that conceals a site flaw becomes the very soul of the design. This is carried forward through the entire home. Everything else fell into place organically.
