Characteristics of Quartz Surfaces Making it Popular among Home Owners.

Quartz countertops are man-made engineered stone countertops formed by combining around 90 % ground quartz (a natural hard mineral) with 8- 10 % resins, polymers, and pigments fused under intense heat and pressure to form a solid slab. This creates a tough granite-like surface but requires less maintenance. The appearance depends on how the quartz is grounded : finely ground quartz produces a smooth look, while coarsely ground quartz produces a flecked appearance. And pigments added during the process impart color to the countertop.

Made from one of the hardest minerals on earth, quartz countertops are arguably the most durable option for kitchens. They’re also some of the most eye-catching. They come in a wide variety of colors, including apple green and fire-engine red, blacks, earthy browns, and creams, with sparkles and veining for the look of granite or marble. Also, the natural properties of quartz crystals and the engineering process give quartz countertops many valuable benefits and characteristics. They are:-

1. Naturally Stunning

Quartz countertops are naturally beautiful. The appearance of quartz surfaces largely depends on the size of the quartz granules used. Finer granules will result in a more consistent appearance. While larger crystals will create a more speckled look, similar to granite countertops. You can find quartz countertops in a wide range of colors. You will find a selection that matches your taste, from neutral earth tones to bold, bright colors and everything in between.

2. Made Tough to Last Long

Quartz countertops are significantly stronger than granite countertops. They are less vulnerable to chipping and cracking from falling objects. It is also inherently scratch resistant from normal wear and tear. However, it is essential to point out that quartz is not scratch-proof, it is scratch resistant. With extreme amount of weight and force, you can damage quartz countertops.

3. No Scorch Marks Here

Quartz has the ability to resist short exposure to heat without damage to the surface. Prolonged heat exposure can cause cracking due to the rapid temperature change. To avoid this, it is recommended that you always use a hot pad or trivet under a crockpot or griddle.

4. Non-Porous

Quartz countertops are a non-porous surface and hence will not absorb water or other fluids. This characteristic enhances quartz countertops in a few ways.

  • No sealing necessary: Hence Quartz is relatively maintenance-free compared to other countertop materials.
  • Resistant to staining: Quartz counters will not stain from common kitchen liquids, such as coffee, tea, or lemon juice. It’s also easy to clean with mild soap, water, and a soft cloth.
  • Resistant to bacteria: Since quartz is non-porous, bacteria will not grow on it. In fact, NSF International has certified quartz countertops as a safe food preparation surface.

Drawbacks

  • Costly: With all the advantages above, quartz surfaces are slightly pricey as they are man-made.
  • Can’t take extreme heat: Although they are heat and scorch resistant, but only up to a point. Most manufacturers say their products can handle up to 200 degrees C, but a sudden change in temperature or sustained heat from a pan left on the counter may cause the surface to crack. To be safe, always use a trivet or a hot pad.
  • Can’t be used outdoors: Install it outdoors in an uncovered area, and you’ll void the warranty. The direct sun beating down on it day after day can cause colors to fade or the countertop to warp or split over time.

Through the stunning appearance, unparalleled strength, and performance, quartz countertops are becoming the first choice for homeowners. If you are planning to replace your old kitchen countertops, consider these advantages when making a decision. Compared with other countertop materials on the market, quartz is a superior choice and will bring increased value to your home.
