Artificial grass that imitates natural grass are slowing growing popularity due to it’s easy maintenance. Other than that it’s also very easy to install. Let’s have a step by step look at how to install artificial grass at your lawn:
1. Remove the existing turf upto a depth of about 75mm. Install treated wood timber battens around the perimeter, if framing is required.
2. Create a base that will help with drainage, with a depth of around 50mm. Compact it using a compactor plate or roller.
3. Top with sharp sand or similar aggregate to a depth of around 25mm, or flush with the top of the timber frame. Level the area again using a compactor plate / roller or wood batten.
4. Ensure that, a weed membrane is laid over the sand, with each membrane piece overlapping by a minimum of 100mm for optimum coverage. Position and fix using 4” galvanized nails every 50-75cm, then trim off any excess part.
5. Unroll the artificial grass, on the membrane and make sure that the grass pile on each roll is pointing in the same direction. Butt any edges together and put some weight on it to avoid movement. Use a knife to cut and shape the grass as required.
6. Place seaming tape under each joint and evenly apply glue adhesive to the top surface of the tape. Close off the seam and apply firm pressure to ensure adhesion to the grass backing, and take care not to squeeze the adhesive up onto the grass strands.
7. Use 6” galvanized nails at an angle every 200mm to secure the perimeter or, if using a frame, use wood/decking screws to fix the grass directly over and onto the wood battens.
8. To add additional weight and stability to the grass, kiln dried sand or an infill can be spread across the surface at a rate of approximately 3-5Kg per square meter , depending on the pile height.
9.Brush the sand into the grass using a stiff yard brush, against the pile, to help it stand upright.
With these 9 steps you will get a beautifull looking lawn ready to use.
